Shetland v Orkney Intercounty Date Announced

The date for the 2016 senior intercounty fixture between Shetland and Orkney has been set for the 30th of July in Kirkwall. This year’s fixture will mark the 98th clash between the two teams for the coveted Milne Cup which is currently held by Shetland after their 6-0 victory at the Gilbertson Park last year.

The annual fixture has been dominated by the boys in blue over the last couple of decades, with Shetland claiming victory in 19 of their last 21 games against their bitter rivals. However Orkney’s two victories in that time did come on home soil, with a penalty shoot-out win in 2004 and a 3-1 victory in 2012. And Shetland only sealed victory in extra time the last time they travelled to Orkney in 2014.

Shetland managers John Scott Christie and Allan Graham will be selecting a 16-man squad to travel down for the match. After unfortunately being forced to pull out of the Jock Mackay Memorial Cup, this year’s county fixture will mark the managers’ first competitive outing since their appointment at the end of last summer.

Despite a disrupted and frustrating few months for the squad, the management staff are in the process of arranging friendlies on the mainland in the coming weeks and the Scotland amateurs are scheduled to travel to the Isles in April. The annual fixture between the Shetland county squad and the league holders Celtic will also provide extra preparation for the team before the county fixture in July.

As always, the Shetland team would be very appreciative of any travelling support and there are a number of different routes that can be taken. The squad will be travelling down on the Friday night ferry and back on the Sunday evening, however there will also be a ferry home on the Saturday evening. There are also several flights to between Sumburgh and Kirkwall over the weekend. So get your tickets and accommodation booked, your scarves bought and come and support the boys!
