Shetland to face Thurso in Jock Mackay Cup fixture

Following another series of postponements, Shetland FC are once again back in action this weekend with a Jock Mackay Cup first round tie against Thurso.

The date for the match has already been shifted twice due to North Caley League fixture movements in recent weeks, in what has been another disrupted winter campaign for the blues.

Their last competitive outing was last November, a 2-0 defeat to Ayrshire AFA in the first round of the inter-association cup.

Despite Shetland being the home team in the tie, they will ironically travel to Thurso’s home ground, the Dammies, for the match on Saturday afternoon.

Thurso, who are currently sitting second in the league, will provide stiff opposition for the young Shetland side who are looking to reclaim the trophy they won back in 2015.

Since then, Golspie Sutherland and Orkney have been crowned Jock Mackay champions with the latter overcoming the blues 2-1 on their way to glory last season.

The new management team of Kevin Main and Robert Geddes will be hoping for better fortunes this time out and have selected a strong squad for the trip south tonight.

14 of the young yet experienced 15-man squad all featured at the Island Games in Gotland last year and have amassed a number of county appearances down the years.

The incoming Spurs trio of Molloy, Ward and Harkness all miss out this weekend while county starters Maver and Clubb are also unavailable for the fixture.

Shetland squad travelling to Thurso: Grant Wood (Spurs), Saul Swanson (Thistle), Leighton Flaws (Delting), John Allan (Scalloway), Piotr Drozdowski (Whitedale), Joel Bradley (Celtic), Richard Arthur (Whalsay), Danny Thomson (Whalsay), Stuart Copland (Thistle), Stuart Farmer (Ness), James Farmer (Ness), Calvin Leask (Thistle), James Aitken (Celtic), Gary Sutherland (Delting) & Greg Tulloch (Whitedale).
