Shetland defeated in 2016 Intercounty clash

Orkney 3-2 Shetland

(Scorers: Chris Hellewell, Thofinn Stout & Chris Simpson; Paul Molloy & Joe Kay)

Senior Intercounty

Shetland suffered a shock 3-2 defeat to bitter rivals Orkney at the weekend, their first loss to the auld enemy since the 3-1 defeat in 2012. In a match that panned out in similar fashion to 4 years ago, the boys in blue dominated large spells of the match but were unable to turn their possession into goals on the day.

Despite Paul Molloy having a shot cleared off the line and Leighton Flaws seeing a shot crash back off the bar, the teams went into half time deadlocked at 0-0. The second half started in similar fashion to the first with the away side on top and finally got the break through on the hour when Paul Molloy raced through to score.

However 3 Orcadian goals in a 15 minute spell completely swung the tie, leaving the Shetland players, managers and travelling supporters shell shocked with time running out. Josie Kay managed to pull one back with 5 minutes to go but it was too little too late and Orkney held out to ensure the Milne Cup stayed in Kirkwall.

A full match report will be included in this week’s Shetland Times.
